Grenada citizenship: an overview

There are seven primary ways to obtain the country’s citizenship:

  • birth, if the person was born in Grenada;
  • descent, if the person has at least one parent who is Grenadian;
  • by adoption, if the persons was adopted by a citizen of the country;
  • marriage, if the foreigner is the spouse of a Grenadian national;
  • naturalisation, if the person has lived in the country for at least six years;
  • registration, if the person is a Commonwealth or Irish national;
  • investment, if the foreigner contributes at least $235,000 to the Grenada economy.

Investment is the most popular option, allowing foreigners to obtain Grenada citizenship within at least eight months. There are also no requirements for living in the country.

Under the Grenada Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Program, investors make a non-refundable contribution to the Grenadian National Transformation Fund or buy property in the country.

Starting July 1st, 2024, Grenada, along with Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St Lucia, and St Kitts and Nevis, has increased the minimum investment threshold to $200,000. The new minimum investment amount in Grenada is $235,000.

Grenada citizenship by investment

Grenada’s citizenship by investment program offers two main options:

Both routes provide a Grenadian passport with benefits for individuals and families.

Purchase of real estate — at least $270,000

To obtain Grenada citizenship by investment, applicants can purchase real estate for at least $270,000 from a government-approved list. This amount allows them to acquire a share in a project. If they prefer full ownership, they can buy a villa or an apartment for at least $350,000. The sum is flat, and the investor's expenses depend only on the additional fees.

The property can be rented out, yielding 2 to 5% annually. After five years, the real estate can be sold, and the invested money is returned.

Grenada citizenship by naturalisation

Getting Grenadian citizenship by naturalisation is possible for foreigners who have lived in the country for five years and want to make it their permanent home. Applicants need to meet certain residency rules, prove good character, and show they plan to stay in Grenada.

Requirements

Any person of full age can apply for citizenship by naturalisation if they have lived in Grenada for 12 months immediately preceding the application and for at least five years out of the seven years prior to the said 12-month period.

Those serving the Government of Grenada are exempt from the full residency requirement.

Other requirements the foreigner must meet include being of good character, knowing English, and intending to reside in Grenada.

Documents

The applicant must provide the following:

  • an application form signed by a magistrate or notary;
  • a new passport form;
  • a valid passport;
  • a birth certificate;
  • reference letters from a reputable person in the country of birth or residence and Grenada;
  • a bank statement;
  • a police certificate from a country of origin and residence — it must be dated within six months of application;
  • four passport-size photos certified by a magistrate or notary;
  • a letter stating the date of arrival in Grenada, the purpose of the visit, the activities engaged in, and the reason why the applicant would like to be a citizen;
  • a medical certificate from a registered practitioner.

Subsequently, the foreigner can obtain permanent residence if they intend to continue living in the country. After six years, they are eligible to apply for citizenship.

Grenada citizenship by marriage

A foreigner married to a Grenadian national can obtain the country’s citizenship by marriage.

The documents are submitted to the Department of Home Affairs, and the application is considered within 1 to 12 months.

Fee

The application fee varies based on the spouse's citizenship status:

  • if married to a citizen by birth, the fee is EC$1,000, or roughly $370;
  • if married to a citizen by naturalisation, the fee is EC$2,500, or roughly $900.

The documents are submitted to the Department of Home Affairs.

Fee. EC$250, or roughly $92.

Types of Grenada passports

Grenada issues several types of passports, each serving different purposes and categories of citizens. While most people, including investors, receive the standard passport, other forms, such as diplomatic and emergency passports, are available for specific circumstances.

Standard passport

A standard passport is issued to all citizens of Grenada and grants all the rights of citizenship. Investors obtain this type of passport.

This document is valid for 5 years, regardless of the age of its holder. To renew it, the citizen provides an application form, proof of identity, passport-size photos, and their current passport. The processing time is 2 to 4 weeks.

The new passport is issued based on a citizenship certificate, which is granted for life and does not need to be renewed.

Non-standard passports

Diplomatic passport. This passport is issued to government officials, ambassadors, and consuls who require diplomatic immunity and privileges. It can be used only for official visits, not personal trips.

Emergency passport. An emergency passport is granted to individuals who need to travel urgently but do not have access to their regular passport. This document can be issued in situations such as a death in the family, urgent medical treatment, or evacuation from a dangerous situation.

9 benefits of Grenada citizenship

1. Visa-free travel to the UK and China. The UK and China have visa-free agreements with Grenada. Thus, Grenadians can enter these countries freely and spend up to 30 days in China and up to 180 in the UK annually.

2. Increased global mobility. Grenada citizens enjoy visa-free access to 148 countries, including Schengen states, South Korea, Singapore, and Caribbean nations like Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, and St Lucia.

However, each country has specific limits on the duration of stay, so it's advisable to check these conditions in advance.

3. Tourist and business visas to the US. Grenadians can secure a B-1/B-2 Visitor Visa to the US, valid for 10 years. With it, they can travel or get medical treatment for up to 180 years per year.

Investors can also obtain an E-2 visa if they buy or establish a business in the U.S. With it, they are allowed to live, study, and work in the country. Initially, the visa is valid for two years and can be extended an unlimited number of times, provided that the holder maintains the investment.

4. Attractive tax system. Grenada does not impose income or corporate taxes on earnings from outside the country. There are also no taxes on wealth, inheritance, or capital gains.

5. Opportunity to expand a business. Foreigners can register companies in Grenada and facilitate cooperation with international partners. Entrepreneurs' personal information is not entered into the commercial registry, allowing foreigners to secure their data.

Grenadian companies can easily operate in Caribbean Community countries, such as Antigua and Barbuda or Dominica because the area has a unified market with a free flow of labour, money, and products.

Additionally, Grenadian citizens face low risks of bank account refusals in many global banks, including those in Europe.

6. Securing a safe haven. Citizens of Grenada can enter the country under any circumstances, regardless of whether the borders are closed. This is especially helpful if instabilities occur in one's country of residence.

7. No residency requirements. Investors do not need to visit Grenada to maintain their citizenship. They can spend holidays there or never come to the country at all.

8. Dual citizenship. Grenada allows dual and multiple citizenships, so citizens do not need to renounce their other nationalities. This applies only if the other countries also permit dual citizenship.

9. Holidays in a tropical paradise. Grenada is a beautiful and peaceful island with a small population of around 125,500 people and a close connection to nature. There are plenty of wonders, such as Annandale Falls, Grand Etang National Park, Morne Rouge Bay, and Levera National Park.

The country has a pleasant climate with air temperatures over 20°C all year round and the sun shining often. The water temperature varies from 25°C to 29°C, making it a perfect place to spend family holidays.

Grenada passport visa‑free countries

Grenadians enjoy visa-free entry to the Schengen Area, the UK, China, and various Caribbean states.

Some countries, such as Bhutan or Cambodia, require Grenadians to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) in advance or a visa upon arrival at customs. These processes are quicker than standard visa applications and can be completed in just a few minutes.
