Grenada citizenship by investment pros and cons

8 benefits of holding Grenada citizenship

1. Visa-free travel. Grenada citizens can enter 140+ countries without a visa. That includes the Schengen states, the UK, South Korea, and China.

Grenada is one of a few Caribbean countries with a visa-free regime with China — Grenadians can stay there for up to 30 days.

2. Business visa to the USA. Grenada citizens easily obtain an E-2 business visa to the USA. It is given to foreigners with advanced degrees or exceptional abilities. With it, they can live and work in the States if they establish or buy a business there.

A spouse and unmarried children under 21 can also get immigrant status in the US if the main applicant is approved for an E-2 visa.

Investors who don’t hold a Grenadian passport can usually apply for an EB-5 visa only, which requires a business investment of $800,000 or more.

3. Visitor visa to the USA for 10 years. Grenadians applying for B-1/B-2 tourist visas can get them for 10 years right away. The visas allow them to travel, participate in business meetings and get medical treatment in the US for up to 180 days a year.

4. Creation of a safe haven. Grenada citizens can enter the country anytime under any circumstances, even if the borders are closed to foreigners.

5. Immigration to Grenada. Foreigners with Grenada passports can move to Grenada and live there for as long as they want.

Grenada is a peaceful country with warm year-round weather and breathtaking landscapes. It is a perfect choice for a calm living or retirement.

Benefits of Grenada citizenship
Most expats and tourists stay in the southwestern part of the island, as it’s the most developed area where the capital St George’s and an international airport are

6. Tax optimisation. Grenada’s tax system is more favourable than in many countries. For example, there are no taxes on global income, dividends, interests and royalties received in other countries. Grenadians are also exempt from taxes on inheritance, capital gains, income and stamp duty.

7. Registration of a company abroad. Investors can register their companies in Grenada jurisdiction. It helps them reduce taxes and facilitate international transactions. It is also beneficial for the investor's privacy as the personal data of the company's owners isn't entered into the commercial register.

8. Dual citizenship. Grenada allows its citizens to have two or more passports. Therefore, you’re not obliged to forfeit your first citizenship upon acquiring a Grenadian one.

However, some countries like China, Iran or India forbid their citizens to have multiple passports. So make sure you check citizenship policies before applying for Grenada citizenship.

7 benefits of the Grenada citizenship by investment program

1. Relatively low cost of investment.  The minimum sum under the Grenada citizenship program is $150,000. It is significantly lower than, for example, the St Kitts and Nevis's and Turkish ones, where the investment amount starts at $250,000 and $400,000, respectively.

2. Investment returns. If the applicant chooses a purchase of a real estate option, they can return invested money by selling a property. However, it can be done only 5 years after acquiring a Grenadian passport.

3. Rental income. The investor can rent out a property bought under the Grenada citizenship by investment program. The average rental yield is 3—5%.

4. Fast period of obtainment. Getting a Grenada passport by investment takes around 4—6 months. It is remarkably quicker than obtaining a passport by naturalisation, which usually takes at least 2—3 years.

5. Family inclusion. Investors can add close family members to the applications. The list includes a spouse, children under 30, and parents.

Grenada is one of the few investment program countries allowing siblings to be added. They must be over 18, unmarried and have no children.

Grenada citizenship can also be passed to further generations.

6. No residency requirements. Grenada passport holders are not obliged to live in the country to maintain their passport. They can visit Grenada for holidays only or don't visit the country at all.

7. No physical presence requirements. The whole application process is remote and doesn't require applicants to visit Grenada at any step. The licensed agent participates in the procedure on behalf of the investor and works on all the papers on their own.

When ready, the courier delivers Grenada passports to the investor and their family at a convenient address.

5 disadvantages of Grenada citizenship

1. Limited period of stay in the Schengen countries and the UK. Grenada citizens can't live in a Schengen country or the UK with a Grenadian passport only. In the Schengen Area, they can stay for up to 90 out of 180 days. In the UK, the allowed stay is 180 days a year.

2. Not all investments are returnable. There are two options under the Grenada citizenship program, but the investor can return money only if they purchase real estate. A contribution to the National Transformation Fund is non-refundable under any circumstances.

3. A need to get a visa to the USA. To enter the US, Grenada citizens must undergo the whole process of obtaining a visa, which type depends on the trip's purpose.

4. A need to undergo Due Diligence. Due Diligence is a thorough check verifying the investor’s background and reputation. The Grenada Citizenship by Investment unit checks the applicant against different databases. The whole process usually takes at least 3—4 months.

Every person aged 17 and over included in the application must undergo the Due Diligence.

5. Application only through a certified agent. Grenada’s laws don’t allow foreigners to go through the application process on their own. They must get a licensed agent who will apply to the program on their behalf.

Requirements for obtaining a Grenada passport by investment

Investors must be over 18 and of good health, have no criminal record or prosecution and be able to confirm the legality of the income to obtain Grenada passports.

They can add their close family members, such as:

  • spouses;
  • financially dependent children under 30;
  • financially dependent parents of any age;
  • unmarried siblings over 18 with no children of their own.

The investor must choose one available investment option: a contribution to a state fund or a real estate purchase.

The contribution sum depends on the number of family members added to the application. Thus, the sole applicant invests $150,000 while a family of four — $200,000.

Money must be invested in the National Transformation Fund. The investor also pays Due Diligence fees for every family member over 17.

Real estate purchase requires at least $220,000. The investor buys shares in a state-approved project, and the minimum sum doesn't depend on the family composition. It is also required to pay a state fee of $50,000 and a Due Diligence fee for every family member over 17.

A property can be sold five years after obtaining citizenship.
